Vaibhav Sooryavanshi spent IPL 2026 making one of cricket’s oldest habits look optional. New batters are supposed to take a look, judge the bounce and work out what the new ball is doing. The Rajasthan Royals opener often used that first delivery to attack instead.
The official IPL archive eventually gave the pattern its own highlight reel, publishing All first-ball boundaries by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in TATA IPL 2026 on 22 June. By then the numbers were fixed: 776 runs in 16 matches, a strike rate of 237.30 and an IPL-record 72 sixes. He finished with the Orange Cap and four other major individual awards.
The interesting part was not simply the violence of the hitting. It was who kept receiving the treatment.
Six elite quicks found no grace period
Cricbuzz’s statistical review of the season identifies six high-class fast bowlers who conceded a boundary from the first delivery they bowled to Sooryavanshi:

That list covers several different problems for an opener. Bumrah can change release, length and pace without warning. Hazlewood works relentlessly around the top of off stump, while Starc adds left-arm angle and high velocity. Cummins and Henry are comfortable hitting a hard length with the new ball.
Sooryavanshi’s response was strikingly consistent: if the delivery entered his scoring zone, the bowler’s reputation did not buy him a defensive shot.
Reuters captured the Bumrah version during Rajasthan’s rain-shortened match against Mumbai Indians in Guwahati. Sooryavanshi launched the first Bumrah delivery he received for six and attacked him again later in the over. He made 39 from 14 balls as Rajasthan set the tempo immediately.
521 powerplay runs explain the first-ball approach
Those opening shots were not isolated pieces of bravado. Sooryavanshi scored 521 of his 776 runs during the first six overs, the highest powerplay aggregate by a batter in a single IPL season. David Warner’s previous benchmark was 467 for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016.
The six-hitting was even more extreme. Sooryavanshi struck 46 sixes from 223 powerplay deliveries and scored at 233.63 during that phase. Five complete IPL teams hit fewer powerplay sixes than he did individually during the 2026 season.
Opponents did find small pockets of resistance. Cricbuzz recorded only two runs from the 12 yorkers he faced, with one dismissal, while Mohsin Khan conceded two runs in 12 deliveries and became the first bowler to send down an IPL maiden to him. Aggression never removed risk; it simply changed where the risk was accepted.

The first-ball boundaries are therefore more than a viral compilation. They show the organising idea behind the season: Sooryavanshi refused to treat the opening delivery as neutral territory. Against Bumrah, Cummins, Hazlewood, Henry, Starc and Ngidi, the examination occasionally lasted one ball.
